Four Core Program Pillars · Pillar 1
Academics & Innovation
Builds curiosity, academic confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving through engaging learning experiences.
The Pillar
What this pillar is
Academics & Innovation is where curiosity becomes capability. Through chess, robotics, and hands-on STEM, students build the academic confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving that power success in every other pillar and in the classroom.
Programs
The programs in this pillar
What it is
Chess Club is the weekly heartbeat of The Playbook. Because it meets every week, it builds the attendance habits, relationships, and culture that every other program relies on. Each session follows the same rhythm, so students always know what to expect and always have a next goal.
How it works
- A ten minute puzzle or lesson to open
- A twenty five minute themed lesson on one tactic or strategy
- Forty minutes of guided play with live coaching
- A fifteen minute review and a puzzle of the week
- Quarterly friendly tournaments and an internal ladder
What students gain
What it is
Robotics Lab turns curiosity into engineering and is the flagship STEM experience of The Playbook. Two pathways let a student enter in elementary school and grow all the way to a competition team, learning the full engineering cycle along the way.
How it works
- Discovery pathway for grades 4 to 6 with guided build and code challenges
- FTC aligned team for grades 7 to 12 building toward the FIRST Tech Challenge
- Design, CAD, programming, and iterative testing
- An engineering notebook and community outreach
- Scrimmages, qualifiers, and a family showcase
